The author is a southern native, and the book takes place in the south, with language and settings that will be familiar to those with similar backgrounds. There’s Joy in Reading The Memory Keeper’s Daughter

February 22, 2011

The fourth book that Joy’s Book Club reviews is the bestseller “The Memory Keeper’s Daughter” by Kim Edwards. In the 1960’s, a mother gives birth to twins, one of whom has Down’s syndrome; the father tells the mother that the afflicted baby has died, so that only one of the twins remains. A nurse takes the Down’s syndrome baby to an institution, but, because of the abhorrent conditions there, cannot bear to leave the baby, so she raises the baby on her own. The central conflict is whether the father will ever reveal to the mother what really happened to the Down’s syndrome baby, and how this affects everyone, including the remaining healthy twin.
